What is the SSPX?

In honor of the media attention given as of late to the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), I wish to present the following excerpts and links from the website of the SSPX.  In the words of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre himself, we see the purpose and mission of the Society.  And that mission is none other than the mission of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Those who attack the Society under some pretense of upholding unity or out of obedience fail in understanding the very mission and the purpose for which the Society exists.

1974 Declaration
We hold fast, with all our heart and with all our soul, to Catholic Rome, Guardian of the Catholic faith and of the traditions necessary to preserve this faith, to Eternal Rome, Mistress of wisdom and truth...

1979 Priestly Jubilee Sermon
It is necessary that we undertake a crusade, a crusade which is based precisely upon these notions of immutability, of sacrifice, in order to recreate Christianity, to reestablish a Christendom such as the Church desires, such as she has always done...

1988 Episcopal Consecration Sermon
...it is in order to manifest our attachment to Rome that we are performing this ceremony. It is in order to manifest our attachment to the Eternal Rome, to the pope, and to all those who have preceded these last popes...

June 1988 Public Statement against false ecumenism
..with Vatican II a spirit of adultery has been blowing through the Church, a spirit which in the Declaration on Religious Liberty allows of the principle of religious liberty of conscience for internal and external acts...

Spiritual Journey: Archbishop Lefebvre's spiritual summa
...if it please God... I will be allowed to realize the dream of which He gave me a glimpse one day in the Cathedral of Dakar. The dream was to transmit, before the progressive degradation of the priestly ideal, in all of its doctrinal purity and in all of its missionary charity, the Catholic Priesthood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, just as He conferred it on His Apostles, just as the Roman Church always transmitted it until the middle of the 20th century...

Did not Lefebvre consecrate four "bishops" to the episcopacy against the will of Rome? True, Benedict LIFTED the silence on the bishops. He did not however declare them valid bishops and thus successors to the apostles. And also did not the commission Ecclesia Dei excommunicate the society for its actions counter to the will of the Pope's and the of Rome? Now tell me, why would this society be okay to go to in any way? FSSP however has been reconciled with by the church from SSPX so they are OK to go to. I fail to see how either form of the mass, both excepted by Rome and by the Church, could be better than the other. Both are valid and appeasing to the Father as we still offer his son. And this of course is only true if the rubrics are fulfilled. You must see also that some priests, back when the TLM was the was the only mass around, also introduced liturgical abuses so one could not say that the mass was better back then because some priests still did things against the rubrics. Also, the SSPX denies the authority of the popes after Pius X so in some ways they are worshiping the popes, saying that they were perfect which cannot be true. They were men! MEN ARE NOT PERFECT! I pray that you will come out of your slump of focusing on details and form and not on the overall picture which is after all unity with Christ.

Hello,

Your comment has several errors in it.

Point 1: By a bishop’s ordination they are made a successor to the apostles. There is nothing to declare.
Point 2: The Ecclesia Dei Society does not have the authority to perform an excommunication against anyone
Point 3: The FSSP abandoned several tenants of Catholic Theology to reunite with Rome and in so doing they also commit heresies in regards to ecumenism and religious liberty
Point 4: The fact is that the Tridentine Mass is the Mass. The “new Mass” has changed the Rite of the Mass in such a way, namely with the prayers of Consecration changing, with the lacking of an offertory, etc, that there is grave doubt it follows the requirements set forth by Christ for a valid Mass. It doesn’t matter what one person says and what the other says. Is it the Mass or not? Does it retain what a “Mass” needs for it to be a Mass? If yes, then it is the Mass. If not, then it is not. No one, even a Pope, can change that fact.
Point 5: Whether or not a priest follows the rubrics or not has no bearing on the fact that the New Mass is a ceremony with protestant theology in it. Do Lutherans have a valid Mass? If not, then how would the New Mass when the prayers between the two are now virtually the same.
Point 6: The SSPX do not deny the authority of the Popes since Pius X, as stated by their organization time and time again.

Thank you for your comment. I pray that you realize the error of your statements above.
